Externalities

EXTERNALITIES – Benefits received by a third party wherein the third party does not have control over the generation of the benefits.

Tuscany, 1950. A chance encounter between two young people on the street marks the beginning of a whirlwind romance. Yolanda and Clemente Gallorini are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime as they begin to build a life together. No one ever suspects it will end in suspense, intrigue, and tragedy.

Join multiple generations of Gallorinis in this family saga, beginning with the story of a young couple’s move from Tuscany to Toronto in 1950. Through the second generation—Marie, Ana, and Michael—the saga continues all across Canada, from Yellowknife to Vancouver, from Collingwood to Penticton. No one can predict the twists and turns of this family’s story as they navigate relationships, disappointment, and jealousy. Through the lows of discrimination and rejection and the highs of success and love, the story of the Gallorini family depicts the trials and tribulations of the immigrant experience. Family dynamics are constantly shifting, and ambition threatens to cloud judgement as Marie, Ana, and Ana’s husband, David, a retired member of the RCMP, undertake a legal battle over an inheritance and the investigation of tragic family mystery.

A multi-generational saga, Externalities showcases a full cast of characters to portray the experience of one family’s immigration and life in Canada.

Author's Notes

Upon retirement, I reflected on the people I had met and things I had experienced during my working life.  It had been very diversified and we had met some very interesting people. Mulling things over I wondered if it would be worthwhile to develop a story based on my experiences.  I toyed with the idea for several years and made occasional notes, but nothing much was done until we moved to rental cottage while our new house was under construction.  This was during the pandemic and I had lots of time to start developing the story.  Never having written a book, and with the help and encouragement of my family, after several attempts, the story took shape.

The resulting book is titled Externalities.  It is a saga of a young couple from Tuscany who move to Canada, settle Toronto in 1950, where they raise a family and build a new life.  There is success and disappointment as family dynamics create situations which divide the family and must be resolved.  With the involvement of the courts and a police investigation into a tragedy the story takes many twists and turns including road blocks and challenges before the unforeseen conclusion.  The book is scheduled for release in November by Friesen Press.
